Listening Comprehension (Spoken Reception)

Green - Sufficient

• ‍‍The pupil understands grade-level spoken texts and can take full part in class with standard support.
• Move from simple retrieval to higher-order comprehension: connect information across different parts of the text, analyse it, draw inferences, and build a complete picture.

Yellow - In need of intervention

• Pinpoint the source of the difficulty:
  
  • A clear deficit in vocabulary: also a low Vocabulary score.
  • Significant gaps in syntactic knowledge: also a low Word Order score.
  • Lack of comprehension strategies, or difficulty with question types (succeeds with literal questions, struggles with higher-order ones): may also show in Reading Comprehension.
• Target the specific auditory sub-skill the student struggles with by using explicit, guided practice:
  
  • Catching Key Words: Teach students to listen for explicit facts, names, or numbers without getting stuck or overwhelmed when they miss a single spoken word.
  • Identifying Main Messages: Guide students to hear the difference between the primary topic of a conversation and the small, extra details that support it.
  • Tracing Spoken Relationships: Help students recognize basic structural connections in what they hear, such as time order (What happened first vs. last) or basic cause and effect (Why something happened).

Red - In need of intensive intervention

• The pupil may have difficulties with auditory memory that can affect vocabulary and FL language acquisition in general. Include repetition of previously learned vocabulary as well as activities that can strengthen auditory memory skills and increase accessibility to spoken English language prompts.
• Target the specific auditory sub-skill the student struggles with by using explicit, guided practice:
  
  • Catching Key Words / Main Messages / Spoken Relationships (As detailed in the Yellow tier above).
• Structured Auditory Memory Activities tailored for 7th/8th-grade older learners:
  • Activity 1: Verbal Chaining
    
    • Instructional Strategy: Sequential memory & category recall.
    • Practical Pre-A1/A1 Example: One student starts: "In my school bag, I have a laptop." The next student repeats and adds: "In my school bag, I have a laptop and my keys." (Uses tech, gear, and snacks instead of toys).
  • Activity 2: Sound-Effect Stories
    
    • Instructional Strategy: Action-sequence processing.
    • Practical Pre-A1/A1 Example: Give a three-step command chain to follow: "Open your laptop, check your email, then close the screen." Students listen to the whole sequence, hold it in memory, and perform or repeat it.
  • Activity 3: The Memory Grid
    
    • Instructional Strategy: Auditory path tracing.
    • Practical Pre-A1/A1 Example: Call out a random coordinate sequence on a digital coordinate system or grid paper: "A3, B1, C4." Students must listen completely without writing, retain the path, and trace the final line.
  • Activity 4: Grid Placement
    
    • Instructional Strategy: Digital/Physical map orientation.
    • Practical Pre-A1/A1 Example: Provide a map of a digital city layout. Give oral placement clues: "The avatar is at the library. The smartphone store is next to the cinema." Students click and drag digital icons or place pieces based entirely on the audio prompts.
• Work with short, reduced-complexity texts. Pre-teach a small set of high-value vocabulary, chunk the listening task, and build basic relationships between ideas step by step.
• Let the pupil listen as many times as needed (as the task allows). This can help compensate if a pupil demonstrates serious difficulty with auditory memory.
• Scaffold heavily and monitor progress closely.
