Pupils who score poorly on the 6th grade tool for internal assessment should be given the ABLE Kit Diagnostic Tool so that you, the teacher, can see what they already know how to read and pinpoint where they need extra support.
Use targeted small-group or individual practice when a pupil has difficulty hearing or working with sounds in spoken words. To teach common spelling patterns and sight words, refer to Building Blocks 2.
Use guided repeated reading where fluency limits meaning; select comprehension instruction when accurate readers struggle to make sense of a text (Building Blocks 3).
Dialogic storytelling is beneficial for pupils at all levels. Pupils who read confidently need appealing independent texts and more demanding discussion, inference and comparison (see The Joy of Reading resources).
Shared reading boosts vocabulary, fluency and confidence. Give page and line numbers in advance, let partners practise, and give a struggling reader just one short, repeated line.
Offer your pupils a variety of level- and interest-appropriate books and comics for regular, independent reading. Teach the page check: 0 to 1 unknown words is easy, 2 to 3 is just right, and 4 or more is too hard for now. Let pupils switch their books for any reason at all and at any stage.
Readers' Theater lets struggling pupils practise fluency without pressure. Choose scripts with easy and hard roles and choral parts. Pupils highlight their lines and practise silently, then in pairs, before they perform. Assess volume, clarity, accuracy, expression and eye contact, and teach the pupils how to assess themselves and their classmates.
